About the course
What this course covers
Reactive programming handles many concurrent requests with a small number of threads by never blocking while waiting for I/O. It suits services with heavy I/O, streaming data or many slow downstream calls. This course teaches the reactive model in Java using Project Reactor and Spring WebFlux, and applies it to microservice patterns.
You start from the Reactive Streams specification and learn Mono and Flux operators, error handling, schedulers, context and backpressure. You then build WebFlux services with annotated and functional endpoints, call other services with WebClient, access databases with R2DBC, and exchange events through reactive Kafka. You also test with StepVerifier and WebTestClient, debug reactive pipelines, and compare the approach with Java 21 virtual threads so you can make a balanced choice.
There is no external vendor exam. The course ends with a reactive microservice project, and you receive an Assure Success course-completion certificate on completion.
Who should attend
- ● Spring Boot developers who want to learn the reactive stack
- ● Backend developers building high-concurrency or streaming services
- ● Architects evaluating reactive vs virtual-thread designs
- ● Java developers who have seen Mono and Flux in projects and want to understand them
- ● Developers working on API gateways and event-driven systems
Prerequisites
- Good core Java knowledge including lambdas, streams and generics
Key skills
Skills you will walk away with
Reactive Streams concepts
Explain publishers, subscribers, subscriptions and backpressure.
Project Reactor
Compose Mono and Flux pipelines with transformation, combination and error operators.
Spring WebFlux
Build non-blocking REST services with annotated controllers and functional routes.
WebClient
Call other services reactively with timeouts, retries and error mapping.
Reactive data access
Use R2DBC, reactive MongoDB and Redis without blocking threads.
Reactive messaging
Produce and consume Kafka events using Reactor Kafka or Spring Cloud Stream.

FAQs
Questions learners ask us
Q.Is reactive programming still relevant with Java virtual threads?
Yes, in specific cases: streaming, backpressure and very high-concurrency I/O. For ordinary request-response services, virtual threads with Spring MVC are often simpler. The course teaches how to choose.
Q.Is reactive programming hard to learn?
It needs a mindset change because nothing runs until you subscribe, and debugging is different. Regular practice with operators makes it manageable.
Q.Do I need to know Spring Boot first?
Yes. You should already build REST services with Spring Boot before taking this course.
Q.Is there a certification exam?
No. You get a course-completion certificate and a working project.
Q.Which database drivers do you use?
R2DBC for PostgreSQL, and reactive drivers for MongoDB and Redis. JDBC and JPA are blocking and not used in reactive paths.
Q.Do you cover RxJava?
The course uses Project Reactor, which is the standard in Spring. The concepts transfer to RxJava.
