About the course
What this course covers
Teradata is a massively parallel enterprise data warehouse platform used by large banks, telecom companies, retailers and insurers around the world. Its shared-nothing architecture spreads data across many parallel units, and performance depends heavily on how tables are designed and how well queries use that distribution.
This course teaches the platform with that perspective. After an introduction to the architecture (parsing engine, access module processors and the interconnect), you learn how rows are hashed across AMPs based on the primary index, why skew hurts, and how partitioning, secondary indexes and statistics change the optimiser's plans. You will write Teradata SQL with its specific features, read EXPLAIN output to understand join strategies, and tune queries accordingly. Utilities modules cover BTEQ scripting and bulk loading with FastLoad, MultiLoad and Teradata Parallel Transporter. The final sessions look at workload management, security and the cloud-based VantageCloud offering.
Teradata has its own certification programme; this course does not include an exam, and the topics are meant as general working knowledge of the platform.

Prerequisites
Key skills
Skills you will walk away with
Teradata architecture
Explain the parsing engine, AMPs, BYNET and how data and work are distributed.
Primary index design
Choose unique and non-unique primary indexes for even distribution and efficient access.
Teradata SQL
Write queries using Teradata features such as QUALIFY, volatile tables and SET operations.
Join and plan analysis
Read EXPLAIN plans and understand merge, hash and product joins.
Statistics and indexing
Collect statistics and use secondary, join and partitioned primary indexes appropriately.
Bulk loading and export
Use FastLoad, MultiLoad and TPT for large data movement.

FAQs
Questions learners ask us
Q.Is there a Teradata certification?
Teradata runs its own certification programme, but this course is not an exam-preparation course and does not include one. Check Teradata's site for current exams.
Q.How will I practise Teradata?
The batch uses a cloud-hosted Teradata environment for labs. Access arrangements depend on Teradata's current free or trial offerings and are confirmed before the batch.
Q.Is Teradata still worth learning?
Many large enterprises continue to run Teradata and also migrate to cloud warehouses, so both maintenance and migration skills are needed. The MPP concepts transfer to other platforms.
Q.How is it different from Snowflake?
Teradata's performance relies on primary index design and statistics, while Snowflake automates much of the physical design. We compare the two in class.
Q.Do I need ETL experience?
Basic understanding helps, but the utilities module introduces what you need.
Q.Does the course teach administration?
It covers space, workload and security basics, but the focus is development and performance.
