About the course
What this course covers
Scala combines object-oriented and functional programming on the JVM and is used for back-end services and big-data processing, notably Apache Spark. This course teaches current Scala 3 from the ground up, with a clear focus on writing immutable, expressive code and using the type system to avoid bugs.
You start with the language basics, then move to case classes, pattern matching, collections and higher-order functions, followed by error handling with Option and Either, and asynchronous code with Futures. We use sbt for builds and ScalaTest or MUnit for tests, and the final module shows where Scala fits in data engineering.
There is no external exam. The course prepares you for entry and mid-level Scala work and for the Advanced Scala course.

Q.Scala 2 or Scala 3?
We teach Scala 3 and mention Scala 2 differences, since many existing codebases and Spark projects still use Scala 2.12 or 2.13.
Q.Do I need to know Java?
It helps but is not required. Any object-oriented background makes the course easier.
Q.Is this a Spark course?
No. It teaches the language and gives a short Spark introduction. A dedicated big-data course goes deeper.
Q.Is functional programming hard?
It can feel different at first. The course introduces ideas gradually with plenty of small exercises.
