About the course
What this course covers
Puppet is a declarative configuration management tool. You describe the desired state of systems in Puppet's own language, and agents on managed nodes compare reality with the catalog compiled by the Puppet server and correct any drift. Puppet is used in large organisations that manage thousands of servers consistently.
This course teaches Puppet from first principles to patterns used in real deployments. You learn Puppet architecture and how a catalog is compiled, write manifests using resources such as package, file, service and user, group resources into classes and modules, and use variables, conditionals, facts and templates. You separate data from code with Hiera, apply the roles and profiles pattern, use defined types and relationships, and learn how environments and code management work. A section introduces Puppet Bolt for ad-hoc orchestration and testing practices for modules.
There is no exam inside the course. Puppet (now part of Perforce) offers a Puppet Professional certification; its exam details change between versions, so please check the Puppet site if you want it. Delivery is live, instructor-led and online.

Q.Which Puppet version is taught?
We use a current open-source Puppet release. Puppet Enterprise features are mentioned where relevant.
Q.Do I need programming?
No. The Puppet language is declarative and learnable by system administrators.
Q.Puppet or Ansible, which should I learn?
Ansible is easier to start with and more common in new projects. Puppet is valuable where it is already deployed at scale.
Q.What do I need for labs?
A few Linux virtual machines locally or in the cloud; we share setup guidance.
Q.Is it enough for a DevOps job?
