About the course
What this course covers
PostgreSQL is a free, open-source relational database that has become the default choice for many new applications, as well as a common migration target for teams leaving commercial databases. It is respected for standards compliance, extensibility and rich features such as JSONB, full-text search, partitioning and extensions.
This course covers both the developer and administrator views. In the development modules you work with advanced SQL, data types including JSONB and arrays, CTEs, window functions, indexes of different kinds and PL/pgSQL functions and triggers. In the administration modules you learn how PostgreSQL stores data, how MVCC and autovacuum keep tables healthy, how to read query plans and tune memory settings, and how to run backups, point-in-time recovery and streaming replication. Security topics include roles, privileges, row-level security and TLS.
The PostgreSQL community does not run an official certification, and there is no external exam attached to this course. Some companies offer their own PostgreSQL credentials; we note how the course topics map to those at a general level.

Q.Is there an official PostgreSQL certification?
The PostgreSQL project itself does not issue certifications. A few companies offer their own, and this course is not tied to any of them.
Q.Which PostgreSQL version is taught?
A current major release (17 or 18); we mention features that differ across recent versions.
Q.Is this for DBAs or developers?
Both. The first half leans toward development and SQL, the second half toward administration.
Q.Can I use it if I know MySQL?
Yes. We highlight the main differences in data types, transactions and tooling.
Q.Do we cover cloud PostgreSQL services?
We discuss how managed services such as RDS or Cloud SQL change administration tasks, but labs use self-managed PostgreSQL.
Q.Is PostgreSQL good for analytics?
It handles moderate analytics well, and extensions help. For very large analytical workloads, a columnar warehouse is usually better. We discuss the trade-offs.
