About the course
What this course covers
MariaDB began as a fork of MySQL and has grown into an independent open-source relational database with its own features and release cycle. It is the default MySQL-compatible database in many Linux distributions and is common in web hosting, e-commerce and enterprise applications that want an open-source alternative with strong community support.
This course assumes you know basic SQL and focuses on running MariaDB properly. You start with the architecture and the available storage engines, including InnoDB and Aria. You then cover configuration, user and privilege management, query optimisation using EXPLAIN and the slow query log, and the monitoring tools you need to see what the server is doing. The operational modules cover logical and physical backups, binary logs and point-in-time recovery, source-replica replication, and an overview of Galera Cluster for multi-primary high availability and MaxScale as a database proxy.
We point out where MariaDB and MySQL have diverged so you can plan migrations. No external exam is attached to this course.

Key skills
Skills you will walk away with
MariaDB architecture
Describe the server processes, storage engines and how queries are executed.
Installation and configuration
Install MariaDB on Linux and set key parameters for memory, logging and connections.
User and security management
Create accounts and roles, apply least-privilege rules and secure network access.
Indexing and query tuning
Use EXPLAIN, the slow query log and index design to speed up queries.
Backup and recovery
Use mariadb-dump, mariadb-backup and binary logs to restore to a point in time.
Replication
Configure source-replica replication and manage replication lag.

FAQs
Questions learners ask us
Q.Is there a MariaDB certification?
This course does not include an external exam. MariaDB offers its own training and certification; check its site for current options.
Q.Is MariaDB the same as MySQL?
They share a common origin and most basic SQL and tools work on both, but internals, features and version numbers have diverged. The course shows the key differences.
Q.Which version is used?
A current MariaDB 11.x long-term-support release.
Q.Will we cover Galera Cluster hands-on?
Galera and MaxScale are covered at an overview level with a demonstration. Deep clustering design would need a longer program.
Q.Do I need MySQL knowledge first?
Not necessarily. Basic SQL is enough. If you also work with MySQL, our MySQL course complements this one.
Q.Is it a developer or DBA course?
It leans toward administration, with enough SQL and tuning content for developers.
Q.Is it suitable for Windows users?
The labs use Linux. Windows users can run a Linux virtual machine or container, and setup help is given.
