About the course
What this course covers
Lean software development adapts ideas from lean manufacturing, particularly the Toyota Production System, to knowledge work. The best-known formulation, by Mary and Tom Poppendieck, sets out seven principles: eliminate waste, amplify learning, decide as late as possible, deliver as fast as possible, empower the team, build integrity in and see the whole.
This course covers those principles in depth and shows how to apply them. You learn to identify the typical wastes in software work, such as partially done work, extra features, relearning, handoffs, task switching, delays and defects. You map a value stream to find bottlenecks, practice limiting work in progress and reducing batch size, and learn how fast feedback and set-based design reduce risk. We link the principles to Scrum, Kanban, XP and DevOps so you can see where lean thinking explains why those practices work.
There is no external certification exam for this course. You complete in-class exercises and receive a course completion certificate from the training provider.

Key skills
Skills you will walk away with
Lean principles for software
Explain the seven lean software development principles with examples.
Spotting waste
Identify partially done work, delays, handoffs, defects and other wastes in your own flow.
Value stream mapping
Map the steps from request to release, measure delays and find bottlenecks.
Limiting work in progress
Use WIP limits and queues to shorten delivery time.
Small batches and fast delivery
Reduce batch size so feedback arrives sooner.
Deciding late and set-based design
Keep options open when information is limited.

FAQs
Questions learners ask us
Q.Is there a certification exam?
No. This is a skills course with a course completion certificate from the training provider and no external exam.
Q.Is Lean the same as Agile?
They share goals and values. Lean emphasises flow, waste and system optimisation, while agile frameworks provide specific team practices. The course shows how they fit together.
Q.Do I need to know Scrum?
No, but basic agile awareness helps you relate the lessons to your work.
Q.Is it for developers only?
No. Managers, testers, BAs and product people attend because waste and delays span the whole flow.
Q.Will I learn tools?
You will use simple boards and mapping techniques. The course does not train you on a specific software tool.
Q.Can I use this for non-software work?
Many ideas apply to other knowledge work, but the examples and wastes are explained for software delivery.
