About the course
What this course covers
Kanban System Design (KSD) is the first of two Kanban University courses leading to the Kanban Management Professional designation. It teaches how to apply the Kanban Method to a service through the Systems Thinking Approach to Introducing Kanban, known as STATIK.
In 16 hours of live sessions you learn the principles and practices of Kanban, then work through STATIK step by step: understanding sources of dissatisfaction, analysing demand and capability, modelling the workflow, defining classes of service and work item types, designing the board and cards, setting WIP limits and defining cadences. The course also introduces the key flow metrics, such as lead time, throughput and cumulative flow diagrams, and shows how to use them to improve the system over time.
Kanban University lists no exam for this credential; you receive your Kanban System Design certification by completing the class with an accredited trainer. KSD is also the required first step before Kanban Systems Improvement (KSI) for the KMP.

FAQs
Questions learners ask us
Q.Is there an exam?
Kanban University lists no exam for KSD. You earn the credential by completing the class.
Q.Is KSD the same as KMP I?
Yes. KSD is the current name for what was earlier called KMP I.
Q.Does KSD alone give me the KMP designation?
No. KMP requires KSD plus KSI (or an equivalent second class listed by Kanban University).
Q.Is it only for software teams?
No. The method works for operations, support, HR, marketing and other services.
Q.How long does the credential remain valid?
See the current figure on the official Kanban University site.
Q.How is it different from Team Kanban Practitioner?
TKP is a one-day introduction for team members. KSD is a deeper course on designing a system with STATIK and flow metrics.
