About the course
What this course covers
Elasticsearch is a distributed search and analytics engine that sits behind site search, product catalogues, log analytics and security monitoring in many companies. Together with Kibana and ingestion tools it forms the Elastic Stack, used by development, operations and security teams.
This course starts with how Elasticsearch stores and indexes documents using inverted indexes, and why mappings and analysers matter so much for relevance. You will learn to index data, write queries in the Query DSL, tune relevance, and run aggregations for analytics. The newer ES|QL piped query language is introduced alongside. Kibana modules cover exploration and dashboards, and ingestion modules cover bringing in logs and metrics. The operations part explains shards and replicas, cluster health, index lifecycle management, snapshots, performance, and the essential security settings, plus a first look at semantic and vector search.
Elastic runs its own hands-on certification exams for engineers, which are optional and external to this course. The course topics overlap with the Elastic Certified Engineer exam, but we do not claim to cover the exam syllabus exhaustively.
Who should attend
- ● Developers building search features for web and mobile apps
- ● DevOps and SRE engineers handling log analytics
- ● Security and monitoring analysts using Elastic-based tools
- ● Data engineers indexing data for analytics and search
- ● Architects evaluating search and observability platforms
Prerequisites
Key skills
Skills you will walk away with
Search fundamentals
Explain inverted indexes, analysis, tokenisation and relevance scoring.
Mappings and analysers
Define explicit mappings, field types and custom analysers for the right search behaviour.
Query DSL
Write match, term, bool, range and multi-field queries and tune relevance with boosts.
Aggregations
Build bucket, metric and pipeline aggregations for analytics and dashboards.
Ingestion
Load logs and documents with Logstash, Beats or Elastic Agent and process them with ingest pipelines.
Kibana
Explore data in Discover and build visualisations and dashboards.

FAQs
Questions learners ask us
Q.Is the Elastic certification part of the course?
No. It is an optional external exam run by Elastic, and its exam names, formats and fees change, so check Elastic's certification page.
Q.Which version is used?
A current Elasticsearch 8.x or 9.x release; we flag differences between versions.
Q.Is Elasticsearch a database?
It is a search and analytics engine that stores documents. It is often used alongside a primary database rather than replacing it.
Q.Do I need programming skills?
Most of the course uses REST calls in the Dev Tools console and JSON. A little programming helps for the capstone.
Q.What about OpenSearch?
OpenSearch is a related fork with a similar query model. Core concepts overlap, but this course teaches the Elastic distribution.
Q.Does it cover log analytics?
Yes, the ingestion and Kibana modules use log data. Full observability and SIEM products are only introduced.
Q.Will I learn vector search?
You will get an introduction to semantic and vector search concepts and how they fit with keyword search.
