About the course
What this course covers
Chef is a configuration management tool that describes infrastructure as code in Ruby-based recipes. You declare the desired state of a server (packages installed, files in place, services running) and Chef Infra Client converges each node to that state. Chef remains in use in organisations that adopted it early, and its ideas of idempotent, testable infrastructure code carry across tools.
The course explains Chef's architecture and then makes you write real code. You install Chef Workstation, use resources such as package, service, file, template, directory and user, and organise code into cookbooks with recipes, attributes and templates. You manage nodes through a Chef Infra Server or in local mode, use roles, environments and data bags, write custom resources, and test your cookbooks with Test Kitchen, InSpec and ChefSpec before they reach production. We also introduce Policyfiles and how Chef compares with Ansible and Puppet.
There is no exam inside the course. Progress Chef has run Associate and Executive certification tracks, but we could not verify the current exam requirements from official sources; please check the Progress Chef site if you want a vendor credential. Delivery is live, instructor-led and online.

FAQs
Questions learners ask us
Q.Is Chef still used?
Yes, in organisations that adopted it, though newer teams often choose Ansible or Terraform. Chef knowledge is most valuable where Chef estates already exist.
Q.Is there an exam?
This course has no exam. Progress Chef has run certification tracks, but we could not verify current requirements, so check the Progress Chef site.
Q.Do I need Ruby?
No. We teach the Ruby needed for recipes, which is small.
Q.How is Chef different from Ansible?
Chef uses an agent (Chef Infra Client) and Ruby-based code. Ansible is agentless and uses YAML. Both manage desired state.
Q.Will we use a Chef server?
Yes, we cover server-based workflows, and also local mode for easy practice.
Q.Is it suitable for freshers?
Freshers with Linux basics can follow, though Ansible is easier as a first tool.
