About the course
What this course covers
Certified Agile Leadership is the Scrum Alliance programme for managers and executives who work with agile teams but are not in a Scrum Master or Product Owner role. The first course, known for years as CAL 1 and now offered as CAL Essentials (CAL-E), explains why many agile adoptions stall: the system around teams, including structure, metrics and management habits, does not change.
The workshop explores the leader's role in creating an environment for agility. Topics include the agile mindset, creating psychological safety, leading through uncertainty, enabling self-managing teams, rethinking how work, budget and decisions flow, and building a culture of continuous learning. You leave with a personal leadership development plan.
There is no exam. According to training providers, full participation in the course makes you eligible to apply to Scrum Alliance for the CAL certificate. Prerequisites and exact structure vary by provider, so confirm with your trainer.

Q.What is the difference between CAL 1 and CAL-E?
CAL 1 is the older name. Scrum Alliance now offers the course as CAL Essentials (CAL-E). Your trainer will confirm the current name and outline at enrolment.
Q.Is there an exam?
No. The credential depends on full participation in the course, followed by an application to Scrum Alliance.
Q.Do I need to know Scrum first?
No Scrum certification is required, but you should know why your teams are adopting agile ways of working.
Q.I am not a manager. Can I join?
Yes, but the course is built for people who influence structure, policy or team direction. Individual contributors may find it less applicable.
Q.What comes after CAL Essentials?
Scrum Alliance offers CAL Teams (CAL-T) and CAL Organisations (CAL-O) courses for deeper work.
Q.How long is the certification valid?
