About the course
What this course covers
Apache Cassandra is a distributed NoSQL database built for continuous availability and linear scalability across servers and data centres. It is used for write-heavy, time-ordered and always-on workloads such as messaging, IoT telemetry, user activity and fraud signals, where a single database server would be a bottleneck or a single point of failure.
Cassandra rewards a very different way of thinking from relational databases. You model tables around the queries you will run, not the entities you store. This course starts with that mindset: partition keys, clustering columns, denormalisation and avoiding anti-patterns such as unbounded partitions. It then explains the architecture: the token ring, gossip, replication strategies, consistency levels, the commit log, memtables and SSTables, compaction and repair. Practical sessions cover cluster setup, nodetool, adding and removing nodes, backup and restore, security and monitoring, with attention to features in Cassandra 5.0 such as storage-attached indexes.
The course has no external exam. Vendor-led certifications for Cassandra have changed over time, so we focus on practical competence.
Who should attend
- ● Backend developers designing high-write, always-on services
- ● Database administrators and SREs who will run Cassandra
- ● Data engineers integrating Cassandra with Spark and Kafka
- ● Architects comparing NoSQL options
- ● Developers moving from relational to distributed databases
Prerequisites
Key skills
Skills you will walk away with
Cassandra data modelling
Design tables from query patterns using partition keys, clustering columns and denormalisation.
CQL
Create keyspaces and tables, use collections, user-defined types, TTLs and lightweight transactions.
Architecture
Explain the token ring, vnodes, gossip, replication and the read and write paths.
Consistency tuning
Choose consistency levels per query to balance latency, availability and correctness.
Cluster operations
Add, replace and decommission nodes and run repair and cleanup.
Compaction and storage
Choose compaction strategies and understand tombstones and their effect on reads.

FAQs
Questions learners ask us
Q.Is there an official Cassandra certification?
This course is not tied to an external exam. Vendor programmes for Cassandra have changed over time, so check current offerings directly if you want a vendor credential.
Q.Why can I not just use SQL joins?
Cassandra does not support joins because data is distributed. You design tables to serve each query directly, which is the main thing this course teaches.
Q.Which Cassandra version do we use?
A current Apache Cassandra 5.0 release. Differences from 4.x are highlighted for those on older clusters.
Q.Is Cassandra better than MongoDB?
They solve different problems. Cassandra suits very high write throughput and multi-datacentre availability; MongoDB suits flexible documents and richer queries. We compare them in the architecture session.
Q.Do I need Hadoop knowledge?
No.
Q.Will we cover DataStax products?
The course teaches open-source Apache Cassandra. Managed services are mentioned only for context.
Is it suitable for DBAs?
