What this course covers
Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions (AZ-400) is the exam for the Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert certification. It tests whether you can combine people, process and products to deliver continuous security, integration, testing, delivery, deployment, monitoring and feedback on Azure, using both Azure DevOps and GitHub.
Microsoft lists the AZ-400 skill areas and weightings as: design and implement processes and communications (10-15%); design and implement a source control strategy (10-15%); design and implement build and release pipelines (50-55%); develop a security and compliance plan (10-15%); and implement an instrumentation strategy (5-10%). Microsoft updated the English-language exam on 27 July 2026, and the course follows the updated outline. Because pipelines carry most of the weight, labs concentrate on YAML pipelines, GitHub Actions, containers, deployment strategies, infrastructure as code and release management.
To earn the DevOps Engineer Expert certification Microsoft requires one of the Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate certifications in addition to passing AZ-400. Note that Microsoft has retired the Azure Developer Associate certification, so most new candidates use Azure Administrator (AZ-104); check Microsoft Learn for the current rule. The course prepares you for the exam, which you book yourself with Microsoft through Pearson VUE. Delivery is live, instructor-led and online.

Q.Do I need AZ-104 before AZ-400?
You can take AZ-400 first, but to earn the DevOps Engineer Expert certification Microsoft requires an Azure associate certification. Azure Administrator (AZ-104) is the usual one now.
Q.Is the Azure Developer Associate still accepted?
Microsoft's page lists it as a prerequisite option but the Azure Developer Associate certification has been retired. Check Microsoft Learn for how this is handled for you.
Q.Which tools are used in labs?
Azure DevOps and GitHub, with Azure subscriptions for deployment. A free Azure DevOps organisation is enough.
Q.Why are pipelines so important?
Microsoft weights build and release pipelines at 50-55% of the exam, so most practice time goes there.
Q.How hard is AZ-400?
It is an expert-level exam that expects real pipeline experience. The labs help, but additional personal practice is advised.
