About the course
What this course covers
Apache Kafka is the standard platform for streaming events between systems: payments, clickstreams, IoT telemetry and microservice communication. Kafka lets many consumers read the same ordered log at their own pace, and it has become a core part of modern data engineering and backend architectures.
This course takes you from first principles to a working streaming design. You will learn how topics and partitions give you ordering and parallelism, how replication and acknowledgements affect durability, how consumer groups balance load, and how idempotent producers and transactions give stronger delivery guarantees. Labs use current Kafka, which runs without ZooKeeper in KRaft mode, and cover Kafka Connect for moving data in and out of databases, Kafka Streams for stream processing, and schema evolution.
The course prepares you for hands-on work and provides a base for the Confluent Certified Developer for Apache Kafka exam, which is an optional external credential. We teach open-source Apache Kafka concepts, with notes on Confluent platform features where they matter.
Who should attend
- ● Backend developers building event-driven microservices
- ● Data engineers building real-time pipelines
- ● Hadoop and Spark developers adding streaming skills
- ● Solution architects designing integration platforms
- ● DevOps engineers who will operate Kafka clusters
Prerequisites
- Programming experience, preferably in Java or Python
Key skills
Skills you will walk away with
Kafka architecture
Explain brokers, topics, partitions, replicas, leaders, ISR and the KRaft controller quorum.
Producer design
Configure acks, retries, batching, idempotence and partitioning strategy for throughput and durability.
Consumer design
Use consumer groups, offset management, rebalancing and error handling correctly.
Delivery semantics
Choose between at-most-once, at-least-once and exactly-once processing and know the trade-offs.
Kafka Connect
Move data between Kafka and databases or files using source and sink connectors.
Stream processing
Build stateful processing with Kafka Streams including joins, windows and aggregations.

FAQs
Questions learners ask us
Q.Is the Confluent exam included in the course fee?
No. The exam is an optional external credential booked and paid for directly with Confluent. The course covers the concepts and skills it tests but does not guarantee a pass.
Q.Does the course use ZooKeeper?
No. Current Kafka versions run in KRaft mode without ZooKeeper, and that is what we use. We briefly explain ZooKeeper so you can read older documentation and work on legacy clusters.
Q.Which programming language is used?
Java for Kafka Streams and most client examples, with Python examples for producers and consumers. Your batch will confirm the languages.
Q.Is Kafka only for big companies?
No. Teams of all sizes use it for event-driven integration, but you should know when a simpler queue is enough. We discuss when not to use Kafka.
Q.Do I need Hadoop knowledge?
No, Kafka is independent of Hadoop.
Q.Will I learn about Apache Flink or Spark Streaming?
We use Kafka Streams for stream processing and show how Spark reads from Kafka at an overview level.
