About the course
What this course covers
This course is for developers who already write Scala and want to understand the features that make large functional codebases work: type classes, advanced generics, higher-kinded types and effect systems. You will see how the same ideas are expressed with implicits in Scala 2 and with given and using in Scala 3, which helps when working with real-world libraries.
We build up from variance and type bounds to functors, applicatives and monads, then use the Cats library for practical examples. Later modules cover effect-based programming, resource safety and concurrency, and an overview of inline and metaprogramming in Scala 3.
No external exam is attached. The aim is to let you read and contribute to production Scala projects that use these patterns.
Who should attend
- ● Scala developers with 6 months or more of experience
- ● Developers joining teams that use Cats, ZIO, Akka/Pekko or http4s
- ● Spark developers who want stronger Scala design skills
- ● Haskell or functional-programming enthusiasts moving to the JVM
- ● Senior engineers preparing to mentor on Scala projects
Prerequisites
- ● Solid Scala basics: case classes, traits, collections, pattern matching
- Completion of our Scala Training or equivalent experience
Key skills
Skills you will walk away with
Advanced type system
Use generics, variance, bounds, opaque types and union types correctly.
Type classes
Define and use type classes with given/using and context bounds.
Implicits (Scala 2)
Read and migrate implicit-based code found in existing libraries.
Functional abstractions
Apply functors, applicatives and monads to model computations.
Cats library
Use Cats type classes and data types such as Validated and State.
Effect systems
Write referentially transparent, concurrent programs with Cats Effect or ZIO.

FAQs
Questions learners ask us
Q.Who is this course not for?
Anyone new to Scala. Take Scala Training first.
Q.Will we use Cats Effect or ZIO?
We introduce effect-based design with the concepts shared by both, and use whichever library the batch needs. Concepts transfer between them.
Q.Does the course cover implicits as in Scala 2?
Yes. Many production codebases still use them, so we cover reading and migrating them alongside given/using.
Q.Is it heavy on theory?
We introduce category-theory ideas only as practical programming tools, with code in every session.
Q.Is there an exam?
No external exam. You receive an Assure Success course completion certificate.
Q.How long is the course?
32 hours of live online instructor-led training in scheduled batches.
